General information about cookies and other monitoring technologies

We use cookies in some areas of our website. Cookies are files that store information on hard drives or browsers and allow the site to check if you have already visited it. Cookies allow us to determine which pages of the site are most visited as they allow us to see which pages are visited and for how long. This information helps us make the site more responsive to your requests and easier to browse. For example, cookies allow us to ensure that, when you visit again, the information on the site responds to your preferences.

Users can also manage cookie preferences through the browser . If you do not know the type and version of browser used, you can click on “Help” in the browser window at the top and access all the necessary information. General information on the rules relating to consent to the use of cookies

Italian legislation (article 122 of Legislative Decree 196/03 “Personal Data Protection Code” hereinafter referred to as the “Code”) introduced EU Directive 2009/136/EC into Italian law, requiring the managers of websites that use cookies or other tracking technologies to inform the user about the types of cookies used by the website.

The Italian data protection authority’s decision no. 229 of 8 May 2014, published in the Official Journal of the Italian State no. 126 of 3 June 2014, categorises cookies into two macro-categories: 'technical' cookies and 'profiling' cookies.

Technical cookies
Technical cookies are used for the sole purpose of ‘carrying out the transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network”, or as strictly necessary for the provider of an information society service explicitly asked by the subscriber or user to provide that service’.
They are not used for other purposes and are normally installed directly by the owner or manager of the website. They can be divided into navigation or session cookies, which allow the normal browsing and use of the website (allowing users, for example, to make a purchase or authenticate themselves to access restricted areas); analytics cookies, similar to technical cookies when used directly by the site manager to collect information, in aggregate form, on the number of users and how they visit the website; functionality cookies, which allow the user to browse according to a series of selected criteria (for example, the language, the products selected for purchase) in order to improve the service provided. The prior consent of users is not required for the installation of these cookies.
Profiling Cookies
Profiling cookies are designed to create user profiles and are used to send advertising messages that match the preferences expressed by the user while surfing the net. Due to the particular invasiveness that such devices may have in the private lives of users, European and Italian legislation require the user to be adequately informed about their use and to express their valid consent.
Article 122 of the Privacy Code refers to these cookies and provides that information may only be stored on the terminal equipment of a contracting party or user, and previously stored information may only accessed, if the contracting party or user has given his/her consent after being informed in a simplified manner.

In the same decision no. 229 of 8 May 2014, the Italian Data Protection Authority also categorised cookies according to the subject acting as data controller of the personal data collected by the cookie, distinguishing between first-party cookies and third-party cookies.

First party cookies
These are cookies managed by the site owner. For these cookies, the duty to disclose lies with the site owner. The latter is also required to state the methods for blocking the cookie.
Third party cookies
These are cookies managed by a third party other than the site owner. For these cookies, the duty to inform and state how the cookie may be blocked lies with the third party, while the site owner is required to include a link to the third party site where this information is available.

For both types of cookies (first-party or third-party) consent is obtained, in the case of a profiling cookie, using a special banner on the home page.
